How I Became a Dentist

Most people get a chuckle out of the story about how I got into dentistry. I thought I’d share it with you. I know you will keep it just between us.

Sometimes you end up doing what you do because you just bet you can do it.

I planned to get a PhD in chemistry, to be a chemist. That’s where I was headed.

Walter Baisley, I’ll call him to protect his innocence, was a year ahead of me at Oklahoma Baptist University. One night he came waltzing into the dorm waving an acceptance paper for dental school.

Pompous beyond words, he said, “Hey, I got into dental school. Five hundred people apply. They just accept 80. I was one of them. Aren’t I neat?”

I said, “Walter, you’re so full of hot air. Anybody can get into dental school.” He said, “I bet you $100 you couldn’t.” I said, “I bet you $100 I can.” That was $100 I didn’t have. Walter made a big deal out of it. A bunch of people were there to watch the scene go down.

How I Became a Dentist (continued)

I had no choice. I applied to the University of Missouri Dental School in Kansas City. I got accepted without even going back for an interview.

Waving my acceptance letter, I made a big deal out of telling Walter in front of these guys, “I got in. Where’s the $100?” He wrote me a check for $100.

The acceptance letter said they required $100 to hold the seat, so I forked that $100 over to the University of Missouri in Kansas City.

I got in for all the wrong reasons, but after the first year there I felt it was good for me and I just went ahead with it.

After my studies at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, I stayed in Kansas City and practiced restorative dentistry for fifteen years before my family and I moved to Boston so I could study Endodontics.

Again, Thanks!!!

We have performed thousands of root canals during these 20 years. It has been a pleasure to serve the people of Southern Arizona with you. We sincerely thank you and want you to know, more than ever, we are here to exceed your expectations and those of the patients you send our way.

Once again ...

I bring a heart full of thanks and gratitude to all of you who have helped with any of the HOPE FEST events. In addition to the many doctors who volunteer their time and resources, I give HUGE PROPS to the many hygienists, assistants, and office volunteers that have helped make Hope Fest a success for 21 years now -- AMAZING!!!

We are so blessed to have a dental community that has such a heart to reach out to the poor and under--privileged. Your outpouring of compassion and hard work has always made this event such a huge success and impacts our community in ways like nowhere else. I thank you so much!

Please help again. The last several years have been so difficult for everybody and this year is no different. We are anticipating a huge need this year. Here’s how you can help.

Treat Patients in Your Own Office ...

This will be our third year of doctors treating Hope Fest patients in their own offices. This avenue of volunteering is gaining great popularity from dental teams because the treatment is done in the familiar surroundings of their own offices. Please consider this option– the positive responses from the doctors and their teams have been fantastic!

Dentures/Partials

We will be providing dentures/partials once again. The number of cases that will be provided will be based on monetary donations and the number of volunteer doctors willing to do denture cases. Remember—all lab fees are covered so there is no expense to you. This service is by far the greatest attraction to many patients and will be limited by the number of doctors volunteering their services and the dollar donations earmarked for dental services. Again this year, we are so fortunate to have our local dental labs helping out.

We are figuring a full set of dentures will be running about $320 to process—which is fantastic—thank you so much dental labs!!!!!!!

Monetary Donations ...

As you may have guessed, HOPE FEST DENTAL always accepts monetary help. If you can’t help the day of the event and doing a denture isn’t for you, maybe your gift to HOPE FEST could be a monetary one. I guarantee every dental dollar received goes directly to our dental patients, whether it’s for supplies or lab fees. We do not share these funds with any other part of HOPE FEST.

C.E. Credit ...

DON’T FORGET—you’ll receive one hour of C.E. credit for each hour you volunteer. (This also applies to the doctors treating denture patients.)

PLEASE ...

take the time right now to call and /or email to commit to helping with this year’s HOPE FEST. This is truly an event that significantly impacts Tucson. Please help—we need each and every one of you!

Call 917-2348, or email Hopefestdental@gmail.com to sign up.

Blessings to you,
